How to save money by reducing the need for car repairs

At some point in time, everyone is going to have to get some car repairs done on their vehicle. It is a natural part of life. Parts wear out. Accidents occur. Things break down.

The only question is how often will the car repairs be needed. It’s not always due to luck or chance, but there is a direct correlation between the amount of car repairs that are needed, and how well you look after your car.

It is a fact that cars which are well maintained break down less often, and last longer before things go wrong. The good news is that you don’t need to be a mechanic to keep your car in tip top shape, and anyone can take the following simple steps from home in Brisbane.

1. Tyres

Good tyres aren’t just for safe driving, but their condition directly impacts the wear and tear on a number of other car parts. Bald tyres place a greater strain on your brakes, plus neven and warped tyres cause vibrations when driving, and this wears out many car parts including the shocks and steering column.

2. Fluid Levels

Checking your fluid levels should be a natural part of car maintenance, but many people are too lazy to do it. You should check your radiator water, engine oil, transmission oil, windscreen wiper fluid, and brake fluid. If any of these drop too low when driving, it can cause damage to the respective parts. If you don’t know how to check any of these, ask your local Brisbane car mechanic next time you are down there for a car service.

3. Safety Features

Along with the fluid level check, you should also periodically check all the cars features to make sure everything is in good working order. You can check the function of all the car lights, windscreen wipers, mirrors, windows, seatbelts, horn, and the glass panels. For example, if you find a chipped windscreen early, you can repair it now instead of having to get a new one once it turns into a large crack.

4. Sounds

Many people start to hear weird sounds and noises when they are driving the car, but ignore them as the car is still running well without any physical signs of problems. This can be a major mistake. While every noise is not urgent, some of them are. Unless you can identify the problem causing the sound, then it is best to take it to a repair shop before it turns into a major car repair job.

5. Proper Driving

You can increase the longevity of many different car parts by following simple driving best practices straight from the mouths of the mechanics. These include using your hand brake when parking on hills, don’t ride your brakes downhill but rather use them on and off, turn all buttons off before starting the car, leave the car in neutral for 1-2 minutes after starting it, and don’t change between reverse and drive until the car is fully stopped.

6. Servicing

You have probably heard the stories about cars which are serviced regularly never breaking down. Well, while it is not a 100% guarantee, there is a bit of truth to this, as keeping to the service schedule definitely keeps your car running smoothly. Even a simple thing like changing the engine oil on time, which is done during the service procedure, makes a huge difference to the wear and tear on the engine. Brisbane mechanics also know how to spot potential problems during their complete car service check, such as battery corrosion, and check other periodical replacement parts like air filters, to see they are in an acceptable condition.
